Guy Frometa

Dominican Republic
Born and raised in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (1964)
He started drumming at age 5. Grew up on Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, The Police and of course, tons of Latin music thanks to his parents vinyls collection… At 18 he took on the drum chair for Luis Dias & Transporte Urbano. One of the most emblematic rock bands in Dominican Republic, with whom he stayed drumming from 1983 through 2006..

In 1988 he left Santo Domigo to pursued studies in NYC. Manhattan School Of Music was part of his plan but after a Ten Week Program at The Collective he ended up taking lessons with an array of private teachers, including Joel Rosenblatt, Zach Danziger, Marvin “Smitty” Smith and the revered Sam Ulano among others. After few years of studies, gigs with who’s who on the NYC jazz scene, Guy returned to Santo Domingo in 1996.

He has participated in dozens of Jazz festivals around the world (USA, Japan, Canada, Denmark, Peru, Cuba, Venezuela, Spain, Argentina, Mexico) and his native Dominican Republic as well.
From his recording studio based in Santo Domingo, he does lots of recordings and music production for local and international artists alike.

For his drumming work he has been nominated for the Grammys & Latin Grammys Awards several times with different projects. Winning in 3 occasions with Juan Luis Guerra “Bachata Rosa & A Son De Guerra Live” and also, one Latin Grammy with Chichi Peralta & Son Familia “De Vuelta Al Barrio”

Since 2007 he directs the Dominican Republic Percussion Festival Katarey plus as a Clinician he has participed in various Drum Festivals
including “Encuentro de Bateristas Afro-Caribeños” (Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico. Oct.2018) and twice at UNC Summer Jazz Workshop (University Of North Carolina. June 2015-2018) teaching Dominican Rhythms Drumming.
